Basalt Patu by Alan Hobbs
About this piece
Flat, broad-blade basalt clubs like this one were used by Maori warriors for close-quarter fighting and were the most revered of all Maori weapons. Carved by hand, they were symbols of chieftainship and regarded as valuable heirlooms.
Whāia e koe te iti kahurangi; ki te tāohu koe, me maunga teitei
Seek the treasure you value most dearly; if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain
- Maori Proverb
